TOUR 4. The La Rhune Mountain and Sare
In this tour, we would like to give you the opportunity to get to know and ascend the mountain La Rhune and the prehistoric cave of Sare.
We will leave San Sebastian in direction to Ascain through the impressive coastal road heading to Socoa. On the way, you will enjoy some of the most beautiful views of the sea and the wild cliffs.
Upon arrival in Ascain, you will see the XIV century Lapurdi church, the Romain bridge or a typical house of 1604. Then you will be driven to Col de St Ignace, where we will park our car and get on the zipper train made of wood towards the summit of the mountain La Rhune. The pleasant and enjoyable trainride will take about 35 minutes. At the summit you will have a 360 degree view to the French Basque Country, Navarra, Guipuzcoa, the Atlantic coastline from San Sebastian to the rivermouth of the Adour in Bayonne or even to Les Landes.
The train was built in honor of the Empress Maria Eugenia of Montijo between 1912 and 1924. Currently, about 350,000 people visit this site annually.
You can also enjoy the wildlife and plants like pottokas, births of prey or the black-faced sheep.
It is possible to take the train or walk down the hill.
Next stop will be Sare. We will visit this picturesque village and enter the prehistoric famous cave. These caves have a history of more than 2,000,000 years and during the 45-60 minute visit, you will walk through the 900 authorised meters.
Then we will return to San Sebastian and finish the tour. In San Sebastian, you will arrive around 17 o’clock.
